Who do you want to be?

When we think about our futures, our dreams, our plans we often think about what we want to have, what we want to get. I’d like to challenge you to start in a different way. I’d love to invite you to play along and try this little imagining your future exercise. Grab a piece of paper or your favorite notes app.

Start first with, who or what do you want to be?

  • Write down the qualities of who you want to be, words that describe who you want to be on a daily basis.

  • Your purpose or personal mission, how you show up in life, your strongest traits, the kind of parent or partner you are, etc.

  • If there are traits that you already love about yourself, include those as well!

  • Write them as “I am” statements and the more detailed the better.

Next, you could ask yourself, what do you want to do?

  • Capture what do you want to do in the coming year: quit your job, get married, learn a new language, start a whole new career, go to Europe, whatever it might be.

  • Write these in descriptive "I will" statements.

  • Really explore the options.

  • Don’t limit yourself in any way!

Now you can get to the what do you want to have question.

  • Let's pretend there is no idea of scarcity, if all was perfect what would you want to have in the next year or in the next five years?

  • This can be anything from a house on the beach, to free time, to a yoga studio, to a great wardrobe, to the perfect job, and so on.

  • Just play here.

  • Dream as big as you want at this point.

  • Write these in “I have” statements.

  • Lots of people get a little freaked out and feel greedy if they admit to wanting. It doesn’t feel “noble”. But, just open up to those “have” desires. Knowing what they are can guide you to the places where you resist or block your own success.

Did you just open yourself up to the possibilities of who you want to be, so you can do this, so you can have that, just a little? It starts with being, then we move to the doing, so we can finish with the having. This simple act of vocalizing (or jotting on paper) your hopes and dreams can set things in motion.

If you try this out, I’d love to hear how it went, shoot me an email.

And, you can take this little exercise to the next level at the Create Your Vision Take Action Retreat on Friday, September 29th. Spend the day with like-minded folks at the Peach Cheesecake Ranch visualizing your future and taking tangible steps toward making that future a reality.
